What hard water does in the shower
Hardness is calcium and magnesium. Soap is a salt of a fatty acid. Put the two together and they react. The product is a sticky, insoluble scum, the same grey ring you see on a bucket. In soft water, soap dissolves, lathers and rinses away. In hard water, the first part of every squeeze is used up making scum, and the scum does not rinse. It stays where it formed: on the skin and on the hair.
That one reaction explains most of what people notice. Shampoo does not foam, so you use more. Hair is left with a fine coating of scum and mineral. It feels rough, looks dull, tangles, and is harder to comb through. Skin is left with the same film. It feels tight, and any dryness you already had feels worse. None of this needs the water to be extreme. It starts showing inside the 200 mg/L that IS 10500 calls acceptable, and it is plain at the 600 mg/L the standard allows only where nothing better exists.
There is a second, slower effect. Hair that is coated with mineral film is stiffer and rougher along the shaft. Rough hair snags on itself and on the comb. It breaks more easily, especially when wet.
What is known, and what is not
It helps to sort the claims into three piles.
Well established. Soap scum forms in hard water and deposits on hair and skin. Hair washed in hard water carries a measurable mineral load. Coated hair is rougher and tangles more. Skin feels drier after washing in hard water than in soft. These are chemistry and everyday observation, and nobody seriously disputes them.
Suggestive but not settled. Some studies have found hair washed repeatedly in hard water is a little weaker or thinner, and some have found no difference. Studies in a few countries have linked harder water to a higher rate of eczema in children, but a large trial that fitted softeners in the homes of children with eczema found no improvement in the condition. So there is an association, no proof that hardness causes it, and no evidence that softening treats it.
Anecdote. That hard water causes hair loss. This is the single most common belief, and it runs ahead of the evidence. What hard water clearly does is increase breakage, and broken hair in the drain looks exactly like hair loss. Loss at the root has many causes, from iron levels to thyroid to genetics to stress, and the water coming out of the shower is low on that list. Why shampoo and soap behave differently
Not everything that foams is soap. Most shampoos, most liquid body washes and many bar cleansers are made with synthetic detergents rather than soap. Chemists call them syndets. The useful difference is that detergents do not react with calcium and magnesium to make scum. They lather in hard water almost as well as in soft, and they rinse off. Traditional soap, whether a bar or a liquid castile, does react, and is the main reason hard water feels the way it does.
So the first change is the cheapest. If a bar soap leaves you sticky, swap it for a syndet bar or a body wash. If a shampoo will not lather, wet the hair less before applying and rinse longer afterwards, rather than piling on more product. The label does not always say "syndet"; a bar sold for sensitive or dry skin, or one labelled "soap-free", usually is one.
The second change deals with what is already on the hair. A shampoo sold as clarifying or chelating contains an agent that binds calcium and magnesium and carries them off. Used once a week or so, it strips the mineral film that a normal wash leaves behind. Used every day it strips too much. A diluted acidic rinse after shampooing, which many people make with vinegar, works on the same film by dissolving the mineral in it. That much is chemistry. Claims that it does anything for the scalp or the roots are anecdote.
What actually helps, in order
Ranked by cost, and by how much of the problem each one fixes.
- Switch to soap-free cleansers. Costs nothing extra. Removes most of the scum problem, because the scum stops being made.
- A chelating wash weekly, and a longer rinse daily. Deals with the film on the hair. Does not change the water.
- A shower filter. Be careful here. The cartridge filters sold as shower filters take out chlorine and some sediment, which does help some skin. They do not soften water. Softening needs a bed of resin with contact time and regular regeneration, and a cartridge the size of a fist cannot do it. If the box says it removes hardness, read the fine print.
- A softener. The only thing on this list that removes the calcium and magnesium before they reach you. A small point-of-use unit can serve one bathroom; a whole-house unit serves every tap. An RO purifier is not on the list, and should not be. It is a drinking-water appliance that makes a few litres a day, and it rejects most of what goes into it. Bathing in RO water is neither practical nor necessary. The softener vs RO guide explains why the two are different jobs.
Test before you spend
A lot of money goes on hard-water fixes for water that is not especially hard. Before buying anything beyond a bar of soap, find out the number. Test strips give a rough band, a drop-count kit gives a figure, and a lab report gives everything; the hard water signs guide walks through each. A TDS meter does not measure hardness at all, however confidently it is waved at you, and the TDS vs hardness guide explains why. If the result is inside 200 mg/L, change the soap and stop there. If it is up near the 600 mg/L the standard tolerates only where nothing better exists, a softener is a reasonable purchase, and the soap alone will not get you there.

Does hard water cause hair loss?
Not in the way the phrase suggests. Hard water leaves a mineral film that makes hair rougher and easier to break, so more hair ends up in the drain. That is breakage along the shaft, not loss from the root. Loss from the root has other causes and is a question for a doctor, not a water filter.
