What a softener costs to buy
Every figure on this page is a range, and a wide one, because "water softener" covers four quite different products. Prices move with capacity, with the valve, with the brand and with the season. Treat the ranges as a map, not a quotation, and check the listing before you decide. LUXGEN does not make a softener, so there is no LUXGEN price to quote here, and this page quotes no DraQua price either: where the exact number matters, it links the listing, and the price on the listing is the live one.
| Type | What it is | Rough range |
|---|---|---|
| Point-of-use bathroom unit | A small resin cylinder on one bathroom line. Regenerated by hand. | ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 |
| Whole-house domestic, manual | One tank for the whole house, regenerated by hand with a bag of salt. | ₹20,000 to ₹90,000 |
| Whole-house domestic, automatic | The same tank with a timer or meter valve that regenerates itself. | ₹35,000 to ₹1.2 lakh |
| Commercial and apartment blocks | Larger vessels, higher flow, often twin-tank. | ₹90,000 upwards, often several lakh |
The gap between the bands is the useful fact. A point-of-use bathroom unit costs a fraction of a whole-house unit, because it treats one line and holds a fraction of the resin, and a whole-house unit that regenerates itself costs more than the same tank with a manual lever. For the actual numbers, DraQua lists a point-of-use bathroom softener and a whole-house automatic unit; the price on each listing is the current one, which a figure printed here could not promise to be.
What moves the price inside each band:
- Capacity. Softeners are sized by how much hardness they can remove between regenerations. Harder water and more people mean a bigger resin bed, which is the main cost in the unit.
- The valve. A manual valve is a lever. An automatic valve regenerates on a timer, or better, on a meter that counts litres used. The valve is often the second most expensive part.
- The vessel. Plastic-lined FRP is the standard. Stainless costs more and is rarely needed at home.
- Brand and service. A known brand with a service network charges more and is usually worth it, because a softener that nobody will come and fix is a tank of wet resin.
What it costs to run
Four running costs, in the order you will notice them.
Salt. The resin is reloaded with brine, and brine means salt. A bag of softener salt is the recurring purchase, and it is the cheapest line on this page: a 25 kg bag on DraQua costs less than a plumber's visit and far less than any unit in the table, and the listing shows the current price. How fast you get through it depends on the hardness, the household's water use and how often the valve regenerates. A small family on moderately hard water may make a bag last a couple of months; a large house on very hard water will not. The maintenance guide covers what salt to use and what goes wrong with it.
Water. Each regeneration sends a volume of water to drain: backwash, brine draw and rinse. It is a small fraction of what an RO purifier rejects across a week, but on a metered supply or a tanker it is not zero. A metered valve regenerates only when needed and wastes the least.
Resin. The resin bed lasts years, not months. Chlorine in a municipal supply and iron in a borewell shorten its life; clean, low-iron water extends it. Resin is sold by the litre, and a domestic bed is small enough that a full replacement is a fraction of the unit's price rather than most of it. Budget for it once or twice in the life of the unit.
Electricity. An automatic valve draws about as much as a clock. A manual unit draws none. Neither is worth adding up.
Installation, and what else you may need
A whole-house softener goes on the main line after the tank or the pump, with a bypass so the house has water while the unit is serviced, and a drain line for regeneration. A plumber's visit with the fittings typically runs from about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 depending on the city and how far away the drain is. Some brands include it. Ask.
Two things are often needed alongside. A sediment pre-filter ahead of the softener keeps silt out of the resin, especially on borewell water; if the installer fits a standard 10-inch housing, it takes a standard 10-inch cartridge, changed every few months. And a hardness test kit, so you can check the output and know when to regenerate. Neither costs much, and both extend the resin's life.
A bathroom point-of-use unit is simpler. It sits on the line to one bathroom, is regenerated by hand, and most people fit it themselves.
When it pays for itself, and when it does not
Whether a softener is worth its price depends on two numbers: how hard the water is, and how much water the house heats. IS 10500 calls 200 mg/L as CaCO₃ acceptable and tolerates up to 600 mg/L only where there is no alternate source. Inside 200, a softener is a comfort purchase, and a change of soap is a cheaper one; the hair and skin guide goes through the alternatives. Near 600, with a geyser in every bathroom and a washing machine running daily, the electricity lost to scaled elements and the appliances replaced early add up to real money, and the appliance damage guide works through where the softener pays back.
Two things a softener will not do, however much you spend on it. It will not lower TDS, because sodium replaces the calcium and the meter reads about the same; the TDS vs hardness guide explains. And it will not make water safe to drink. If the reason for shopping is a high TDS reading or a doubtful borewell, the money belongs on a purifier, not a softener, and the softener vs RO guide sorts the two out.
Be wary of anything sold as a softener that needs no salt and no resin. Magnetic and electronic "descalers" are cheap, and there is no consistent evidence that they reduce hardness. If the box does not mention resin and regeneration, it is not a softener.
Softeners of every size above are on DraQua at draqua.online. LUXGEN's own range is RO purifiers and their spares, on the home page.
Questions
How much does a water softener cost in India?
Roughly ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 for a small bathroom unit, ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh for a whole-house domestic unit depending on capacity and whether it regenerates itself, and ₹90,000 upwards for commercial sizes. Prices vary widely by brand and capacity; check the listing.
What is the monthly running cost of a water softener?
Mostly salt, bought by the 25 kg bag. A bag is the cheapest item on the whole bill and lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on hardness and water use, so the monthly cost is a fraction of a bag. Add a small amount of water for each regeneration, and a resin replacement once every several years.
Does a water softener reduce the electricity bill?
It can, indirectly. Scale on a geyser element insulates it, so the geyser runs longer to heat the same water. Softened water stops new scale forming. The saving depends on how hard the water is and how much water the house heats, so it is real but not easy to put a figure on.
