Hard water and your appliances: where scale forms, what it costs, and where a softener pays for itself.

Scale is the expensive part of hard water. It is slow, it is invisible until something fails, and it is billed to you as electricity and replacements rather than as water. This page follows it appliance by appliance.

How scale forms

Hard water carries calcium and magnesium, mostly as bicarbonates, which stay dissolved as long as the water is cool and moving. Two things bring them out of solution. Heat turns the bicarbonate into carbonate, which is barely soluble, so it settles on whatever is hottest. Evaporation concentrates the water until the minerals have nowhere to go, so they settle wherever water dries. That is why the two places scale shows first are the geyser element and the tap.

The rate depends on the hardness, which is why the IS 10500 limits matter. Water at the acceptable limit of 200 mg/L as CaCO₃ leaves a slow film. Water at the 600 mg/L the standard tolerates only where no better source exists carries three times the mineral per litre, and a geyser on that supply is scaling at a pace you can watch across a year. Appliance by appliance

Geysers and instant heaters. The worst hit, because the element is the hottest surface in the house. Scale grows on it as a crust. The crust is an insulator, so the element runs hotter and longer to push the same heat through, which shows up first on the electricity bill and then as a burnt-out element. In a storage geyser the crust also fills the bottom of the tank, cutting the usable volume. Instant heaters block outright. Descaling once a year buys time; it does not stop the process.

Washing machines. Two hits at once. The heater scales like a geyser. And the drum, the hoses and the clothes carry the soap scum that hard water makes, so you use more detergent and the machine still leaves a grey residue. Front-loaders with a heater and a long hot cycle suffer most.

Dishwashers. Hot water, evaporation and glass together. Glassware comes out cloudy with a film that does not wash off, the spray arms block, and the heater scales. Many dishwashers have a small built-in resin softener with its own salt compartment for exactly this reason; if yours does, keep it filled.

Taps, shower heads and mixers. Evaporation scale. Aerators clog, shower heads spray sideways, ceramic mixer cartridges stiffen and drip. Cheap to fix each time with a vinegar soak, and endless.

Kettles and coffee machines. The geyser in miniature. Slower to boil, a chalky floor, and a film on the tea.

RO membranes. The one most people do not expect. A reverse osmosis membrane takes water out of the feed and leaves the minerals behind, so the water on the reject side is more concentrated than what came in. On hard feed the calcium comes out of solution on the membrane surface. Output falls, reject rises, and a membrane that should have lasted two years is done in one. Changing the sediment cartridge on time does not prevent this; sediment cartridges do not remove hardness. The filter change schedule gives the normal intervals, so you can tell an early death from a normal one.

Pipes. The slowest and the most permanent. Over years, hot water pipes narrow with scale and the pressure drops. Older galvanised pipe suffers most.

What ignoring it costs

Nobody sends you a bill marked "hardness". It arrives in four disguises.

  1. Electricity. A scaled element heats the same water more slowly. The extra shows up on every bill, and it grows as the crust does. This is usually the largest cost and the least noticed.
  2. Early replacement. Geyser elements, washing machine heaters, mixer cartridges and RO membranes replaced at a fraction of their normal life. Each item is cheap. Their sum, over the years, is not.
  3. Consumables. More soap, more detergent, more descaler, more rinse aid, and more of your time cleaning things that come back.
  4. Service calls. The plumber for the geyser, the technician for the machine, the descaling visit every year.

The exact figure depends on your hardness, your tariff and how much water the house heats, so this page will not invent one. The way to get it is to add up a year of the four items above. In a house on water near the permitted limit, with two or three geysers and a daily wash, the total is usually a sum that surprises people.

Where a softener pays for itself

A softener removes the calcium and magnesium before they reach any appliance, so none of the above forms in the first place. It does not undo scale already there; that needs descaling once. From then on, the geyser heats at its designed rate, the machines run on their normal detergent dose, and the RO membrane sees soft feed.

Whether the softener's price, salt and upkeep come to less than the four costs above depends on the same two things: how hard the water is, and how much of it the house heats. The break-even is nearest where the water is near the 600 mg/L permitted limit and the house has several geysers and a hot-cycle washing machine. It is furthest where the water sits inside the 200 mg/L acceptable limit, or where the house heats little water. Three limits worth stating plainly. A softener does not lower TDS, so it is not the fix for a high meter reading, as the TDS vs hardness guide explains. It does not make water safe to drink, which the softener vs RO guide covers. And a cartridge or magnet sold as a "descaler" that uses no salt and no resin is not a softener, whatever the box says.

Questions

Does hard water damage a geyser?

Yes, and it is the appliance hard water damages most. Scale forms on the heating element because it is the hottest surface in the house. The crust insulates the element, so the geyser uses more electricity to heat the same water, and the element eventually burns out. Storage geysers also lose usable volume to scale at the bottom of the tank.

Does hard water affect an RO purifier?

Yes. The membrane concentrates the feed and leaves the minerals behind, so on hard water calcium comes out of solution on the membrane surface as scale. Output drops and the membrane fails well before its normal life. Sediment cartridges do not prevent this because they do not remove hardness; a softener ahead of the purifier does.

Is a water softener worth it for appliances?

It depends on the hardness and on how much water the house heats. Near the IS 10500 permitted limit of 600 mg/L, with several geysers and a hot-wash machine, the savings in electricity and early replacements usually cover a softener. Inside the 200 mg/L acceptable limit, or in a house that heats little water, an annual descale is usually the better buy.
