What it is and what it does
An 80 gallon-a-day thin-film composite membrane in the 1812 format, the 1.8 by 12 inch element that most Indian domestic purifiers are built around. It rejects dissolved salts under pump pressure and sends the concentrate to drain, the same mechanism as every RO membrane in the range. The difference from the 100 GPD is simply how much water it is built to pass at a given pressure.
Eighty gallons is around 300 litres a day on the datasheet, and a good deal less in a real kitchen. That sounds limiting until you remember that the purifier has a tank. A membrane that makes a few litres an hour into an 8 or 12 litre tank keeps a household in water all day. This is the membrane most purifiers shipped with, and the one their pumps were chosen for.
What it fits, and what it does not
It fits any 1812 membrane housing, which is to say most domestic RO purifiers, and it runs happily on the ordinary booster pump already inside them. If you do not know what your pump is rated for, this is the safe membrane: it will not ask the pump for more than it has.
It does not suit feed water above 2000 ppm; that is the molded high-TDS membrane's territory. And it is not the membrane to fit if you already have a 100 GPD pump and a household that empties the tank before it refills; in that case you are leaving output unused and the 100 GPD is the better part.
When to choose it over the 100 GPD
Choose it when you are replacing the membrane in a standard purifier and nothing else has changed. Choose it whenever the pump rating is unknown. Choose it for a two-to-four person household on ordinary hard water, where the tank does the work and peak output is irrelevant. It costs ₹150 less than the 100 GPD and, on a standard pump, it makes more water than the 100 GPD would.
Step up only with a reason: a 100 GPD pump already fitted, or a heavy-use home that is buying the pump and the membrane together.
What goes wrong if you pick the wrong membrane
Nothing dramatic goes wrong with an 80 GPD in a purifier that could have taken a 100; you just wait a little longer for the tank. The expensive mistake runs the other way, and it is why this page recommends the cheaper part: a 100 GPD element on the pump this membrane was designed for makes less water, not more. If someone tells you a bigger membrane is a free upgrade, ask what the pump is rated for.
When to replace it, and the symptom
Eighteen to twenty-four months. The clean test is a TDS meter: note the output reading when the membrane is new and change it when that reading has roughly doubled. The second sign is the tank filling slower than it used to. If it fails much earlier, look at the carbon cartridge, because chlorine getting through a spent carbon stage is what kills a TFC film before its time.
