What it is and what it does

This is a thin-film composite RO membrane in the 1812 format: 1.8 inches across and 12 inches long, the size used by most domestic purifiers sold in India. Feed water is pushed against the polyamide film under pump pressure; water passes through, dissolved salts largely do not, and the concentrate goes to the drain.

The 100 GPD rating means it is built to pass more water than the 80 GPD element at the same pressure, about 25 percent more on paper. The figure is measured under datasheet conditions, so in a kitchen the real output is lower, but the relationship to the 80 GPD holds: given the pressure, this makes more water per hour.

What it fits, and what it does not

It fits any purifier with a standard 1812 membrane housing, which is most domestic units; open the housing and compare the old element before ordering. The condition is the pump. This membrane wants a pump built for 100 GPD, such as the LUX-PUMP-100 at 140 PSI.

It does not fit, in any useful sense, behind a pump meant for a 50 or 80 GPD system. The element will physically go in, and then the pump will fail to hold pressure across it, output will drop below what the old membrane made, and the reject line will run harder. It is also not the membrane for feed above 2000 ppm; that water needs the molded high-TDS element.

When to choose it over the 80 GPD

Choose the 100 GPD when the household drains the tank faster than it refills and the pump in the unit is a 100 GPD type in good health, or when you are fitting the matching pump at the same time. Large family, heavy cooking use, a purifier that always seems to be refilling: that is the case for it.

Do not choose it because the number is bigger. For a standard domestic purifier with a standard pump the 80 GPD at ₹650 is the correct part and the cheaper one. If you do not know your pump's rating, that is the answer.

What goes wrong if you pick the wrong membrane

The 100-on-a-weak-pump mistake is the one this page exists to prevent: less water, more waste, and the new membrane blamed for it. The opposite error, an 80 GPD on a strong 100 GPD pump, is harmless but leaves output on the table. And any 1812 on 2500 ppm feed scales early regardless of its GPD rating. Match the membrane to the pump first and to the water second.

When to replace it, and the symptom

Plan on 18 to 24 months. Record output TDS on the day it is fitted; when the reading has roughly doubled, or the tank takes noticeably longer to fill, the membrane is spent. A membrane that dies well inside a year usually points to a spent carbon cartridge letting chlorine through, which damages the film permanently, rather than to the membrane itself.
