What it is and what it does
A yarn-wound candle is polypropylene yarn wound in layers around a core, with the winding pattern getting tighter towards the centre. Water passes from the outside in, dropping sand, rust and silt in the layers until the 5 micron centre stops the fine material. At 120 grams it is the lightest sediment element in the range and, at ₹150, the cheapest.
Its defining feature is not the media but the threaded top. The candle screws into a socket in the housing cap, and its 9-inch length is what leaves room for that thread inside a bowl that is nominally 10 inches. That is the whole reason a 9-inch candle exists.
What it fits, and what it does not
It fits a 10-inch pre-filter housing whose cap has a female thread in the centre. That is the most common wall-mounted bowl in Indian homes, and it is the housing the LUX-PFH-10 bowl kit ships with. If the candle you removed had a threaded top, this is its replacement.
It does not fit a plain-cap 10-inch housing. With nothing to screw into, a 9-inch candle sits an inch short of the cap, is held by nothing, and lets water bypass around it. That housing needs a full-length 10-inch cartridge, the spun pack or a Universal-Fit wound cartridge. It is also not a substitute for the sediment cartridge inside a branded purifier.
When to choose it over a 10-inch cartridge
The choice is made by the cap, not by preference. Threaded cap: this candle. Plain cap: a 10-inch cartridge. There is no performance argument to have; both are 5 micron and both do the same work. If you are buying a housing as well, the PFH-10 kit includes a 9-inch candle and this is what refills it.
Where both bowls are available to you, the threaded-cap bowl with this candle is the cheaper stage to run at ₹150 a change; the plain-cap bowl with the spun pack holds more silt per cartridge on heavy borewell water.
What goes wrong if you pick the wrong candle
A 10-inch spun cartridge ordered for a threaded bowl arrives an inch too long with no thread: it will not go in, and it goes back. A 9-inch candle ordered for a plain-cap bowl goes in, rattles, and filters almost nothing because water takes the easy route around it, so silt reaches the carbon and then the membrane while the bowl looks fine. Open the housing and look at the cap before ordering either.
When to replace it, and the symptom
Six to eight months on borewell water, up to twelve on municipal supply. A wound candle starts white; when it is brown along most of its length, or flow at the purifier has noticeably dropped, it is due. Unscrew, replace, and note the date on the bowl.
