What it is and what it does

A pre-filter bowl is the housing that goes on the wall before the purifier. Water from the tap passes through it first, so the sand, rust and silt in the supply are caught out here instead of inside the purifier's own cartridges. The purifier's sediment and carbon stages then last closer to their rated life, and the membrane behind them longer still.

The kit is everything needed to fit one: the bowl, the elbow and pipe to plumb it in with quarter-inch push-fit connections, the spanner to open it, and a 9-inch three-layer PP spun candle already inside. It weighs 350 grams. The candle is the threaded type, which tells you what kind of bowl this is.

What it fits, and what it does not

It connects to quarter-inch RO tubing, the standard size on domestic purifiers; check the tubing you have before ordering. Because it ships with a 9-inch candle, the cap is the female-thread type, and its refill is the 9-inch yarn-wound candle.

It does not take 10-inch cartridges. The spun pack and the Universal-Fit wound cartridge are too long for a threaded cap; if those are the cartridges you want to run, buy the PFK-2C kit, which is the plain-cap bowl. It is also not a replacement for the cartridges inside the purifier; it is an extra stage ahead of them.

When to choose it over the two-candle kit

Choose this kit when the purifier has no pre-filter and you want the cheapest way to add one, at ₹499 against ₹899. Choose it when your existing bowl is cracked or its thread is stripped and it took a 9-inch threaded candle, because this is the like-for-like replacement. And choose it when the ₹150 candle is the running cost you want.

Choose the PFK-2C instead if you want two 10-inch candles in the box, one fitted and one spare, or if your feed water is heavy enough that the larger spun cartridge's holding capacity matters.

What goes wrong if you pick the wrong kit

Buy this threaded-cap bowl and then order 10-inch spun cartridges to refill it, and the refills will not fit; that is the single most common pre-filter return. Buy the plain-cap kit and try to refill it with 9-inch candles, and they sit loose and bypass. The kit decides the cartridge for the life of the bowl, so decide the cartridge first.

When to replace it, and the symptom

The bowl itself lasts until it cracks or the thread strips; there is no schedule. The candle inside is the consumable: 6 to 8 months on borewell water, up to 12 on municipal, changed when flow at the purifier slows or the candle has browned along its length. On a clear bowl the brown ring is hard to miss.

Which LUXGEN parts it works with

Refill with the 9-inch yarn-wound candle. It sits ahead of any purifier in the range, the Royale Copper, Aura or Curve, and ahead of any purifier from another brand that takes quarter-inch tubing. The sediment and carbon cartridges inside the purifier stay in place and simply last longer.
